Benzoyl Peroxide
Also listed as: bpo
Oxidiser, degrades most retinoids and vitamin C. Adapalene is the exception. Independent lab testing (Valisure, 2024) found benzoyl peroxide can break down into benzene, a known carcinogen, especially under heat or prolonged storage; the FDA acknowledged the concern and a small number of specific products were voluntarily recalled in 2025. Not a reason to avoid the ingredient outright, but store products away from heat and don't stockpile.
Blemish fighters like salicylic and azelaic acid keep pores clear and take the heat out of breakouts.
